Wedding FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything couples usually ask before booking Maroon Hill Estate. Can't find your answer here? Get in touch and we'll help directly.

The Basics

How many guests can Maroon Hill hold?

Up to 120 guests. Our function room comfortably seats 60 to 100 with a dance floor, or up to 120 without one. We'll help you work out the best layout for your guest list during planning.

Where are you, and how far is it from Brisbane?

We're at 2554 Boonah Rathdowney Rd, Maroon, in Queensland's Scenic Rim, overlooking Mount Maroon. It's around 1.5 hours from Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Toowoomba, and about 2.5 hours from Byron Bay and the Sunshine Coast.

Will we have the property to ourselves?

Yes. Every wedding at Maroon Hill has exclusive use of the estate — there's never another event running alongside yours. We host a limited number of weddings each year, which protects the property and means each couple gets our full attention.

What time of year are you open?

We host weddings across an eight-month season, timed to the Scenic Rim's most ideal climate. We're closed from November to February, though we sometimes accommodate weddings during that window — including New Year's Eve and other public holidays. If you're interested in a date during our closure, get in touch and we'll talk it through.

Can we look around before booking?

Absolutely, and we'd encourage it. Private tours run for about 30 minutes, at your own pace, and you're welcome to bring whoever you'd like. You can book a tour through our website, or get in touch directly if the available times don't suit.

Your Wedding Day

What time can we access the venue, and when does the day finish?

You have access from 8:00am for hair, makeup and styling. The celebration runs from 1:00pm to 11:00pm, with music off at 11:00pm and all guests departed by 11:30pm.

Where can we hold the ceremony?

There are two grassed ceremony areas with 360-degree mountain views, plus The Green — an open-air space that also works for festoon-lit receptions — and The Vista, a manicured lawn that's our golden-hour photography spot. You can also hold the ceremony indoors if you'd prefer, or if the weather turns.

What happens if it rains?

You have an indoor option, and we plan for it with every couple rather than leaving it to the day.

If the weather turns, the ceremony moves inside to the function room and takes place in the dance floor area, with your reception tables left set up as they are. It works well for most guest counts and means nothing has to be dismantled and rebuilt around you.

Being straight with you: for larger weddings, that dance floor space gets tight — once you're seating 105 or more for dinner, the tables take up most of it. If you're at the larger end and you want a guaranteed wet-weather plan, a marquee or tipi is the better answer, and several of our recommended vendors can hold one as a contingency. We'll work out which approach suits your day during planning.

Is there a curfew?

Music off by 11:00pm and all guests off-site by 11:30pm. We're strict about this one — we're in a rural area and it's a condition of us being able to host weddings here at all.

Do we need a wedding coordinator?

Yes, for weddings over 30 guests — and for most couples this is already taken care of, because on-the-day coordination is included in our packages.

Your coordinator runs the timeline, directs vendors as they arrive, manages the flow of the day through speeches and dances, and handles anything that comes up — so you're not fielding questions in your wedding clothes. If you'd rather engage your own independent coordinator or planner, you're very welcome to.

Can we get married midweek?

Yes. Midweek weddings are available throughout our season and are a popular choice.

Food & Drink

Do you provide catering?

We don't cater in-house. Maroon Hill is a blank-canvas venue, so you choose your own caterer — either from our recommended vendor list, or someone you'd prefer to bring in yourself. It's one of the things that makes the venue adaptable to very different budgets and styles.

Can we BYO alcohol?

Yes. BYO is welcome, as long as it's served by an RSA-qualified person who isn't also a guest at your wedding. Plenty of couples use a mobile bar service for this, and we can recommend several we work with regularly.

Is there a bar?

There's a pop-up bar on site as part of our furniture suite. Bar staffing and drinks come through your chosen bar service or caterer. We also have a partnership with the Dan Murphy's Weddings Team if you'd like to arrange alcohol that way.

Your Guests

Where can our guests stay?

There's a good range of accommodation nearby — farm stays and cottages within five minutes of the estate, more options in the surrounding villages, hotels, motels and Airbnbs in Boonah about 20 minutes away, and larger group properties further out. Our local accommodation page has the full list with distances.

Is the venue accessible?

Yes. We have wheelchair ramps, and the ceremony areas, cocktail space and reception building are all fairly flat. Where a guest needs help moving between the ceremony and reception, we allow driving on the grass to assist. There's ample parking on site and a circular drop-off point right by the venue. If you have specific access needs, mention them when you enquire and we'll talk through exactly how it'll work.

Is there parking?

Yes, ample on-site parking, plus a circular drop-off point in front of the venue for guests who'd rather not walk from the carpark.

Can we arrange a bus for our guests?

Yes, and a lot of couples do. Coaches can access the property and there's space for them to park or wait at the entrance. We can recommend coach companies who know the venue and the roads in.

Are pets welcome?

Yes — pets are welcome on your wedding day until sunset. They can't stay overnight or be here after dark, so we'd recommend arranging pet care for the evening. There are professional wedding pet-minding services we can point you to.

Can guests camp on the property?

No, camping isn't permitted on the estate. There's plenty of accommodation close by, and our local accommodation page covers the options.

Can we bring children?

Of course. Worth knowing that it's a working rural property — there's a dam well away from the function area, and you should assume any fence is electric — so children need supervising, as they would anywhere on a farm. If you'd like a hand, there are wedding childcare services we can recommend.

Vendors, Styling & Music

Can we use our own vendors?

Yes, and that's the whole idea. We provide the estate, the furniture, on-the-day coordination and planning support, and you build your own team around it. We keep a list of recommended vendors we've worked with and trust, but you're free to engage anyone you like. The only requirement is that vendors carry their own public liability insurance.

What furniture is included?

Our indoor and outdoor furniture suite comes with every wedding: dining tables, white cross-back chairs, ceremony bench seats, a signing table, a pop-up bar, and cocktail furniture with umbrellas for the firepit area. Behind the scenes you also get the things people forget to ask about — backup generator power, a dedicated cold room, PA and audio equipment, on-site bathrooms, parking and post-event waste removal.

Can we hire a marquee or tipi?

Yes. Marquees and tipis can be set up within your booked access window. Several of our recommended vendors specialise in this, and it's a good option if you want a guaranteed outdoor celebration whatever the weather does.

Can we have a live band or a DJ?

Yes to both. There's a 95 decibel limit and no subwoofers, and all music stops at 11:00pm. Live drumming isn't permitted, as it carries much further than amplified music does in a valley like ours. Your DJ or band will need to confirm speaker placement with our venue manager on the day — nothing complicated, it's just about which direction the sound travels.

Is there power for our vendors?

Yes. The property is fully off-grid, so power is provided by generators and allocated by our venue manager based on what each vendor needs and where they're set up. Your caterer, bar and musicians will all be looked after — we do this every weekend. Let us know in advance if anyone needs power at a remote spot like the ceremony site.
